Hvar is the perfect vacation destination. You know those places where you loose track of the days and fall into a relaxed state? It was the perfect point in our fast paced Europe trip to be here, breaking up the intense travel.
We drove by car from Kotor arriving in Dubrovnik for a few days of sightseeing before setting sail to Hvar. As soon as we arrived, it was love at first sight. We quickly slipped into a routine – early morning walks along the boulevard, a restful stop for coffee at Nonica’s (our favourite café) and then commence the day either by boat, car or foot.
The small town is warming with a laid back feel to it, yet still maintains its historic charm through architecture and the Fortica. Taking the steps up to the Fortica and paying the small entry fee is well worth it. Not only does the fort have beautiful character, it captures on obstruction free view of the entire town. A truely breathtaking sight.
Hiring a boat for the day was one of the best experiences during our stay in Hvar. We filled the cooler with food and drinks and headed out to the Paklinski Islands. You can wing this part by driving your boat around the islands until you find somewhere to anchor and swim. We anchored at Vinogradisce Bay, jumped into the sea and sun-baked on the boat.
The eating highlights ended up being tucked away gems. Fig Café offered modern style café food with a Croatian twist. The fig and cheese flatbread was delicious! For the non-vegetarians the watermelon, prosciutto and feta salad sounded perfect for the hot days.
We got our daily coffee fix from Nonica Patisserie accompanied with either their melt-in-your-mouth cookies or a crumbly fruit cake (no, not like Christmas pudding) bursting with berry flavour.
What We Missed Out On
We intended on venturing out to Stari Grad and visiting other beaches like Milna and Dubovica, but we were so captivated by Hvar Town we pretty much stayed put other than our boat trip. We intended on going to the popular Hula Hula Bar on our last night, but unfortunately it rained. Saving this goodie for next time!
If Croatia is on your travel list, do make a trip to the island of Hvar. September was still unbelievably busy in the tourist attraction locations like Dubrovnik, Krka Nation Park and Plitvice Lakes. Hvar will add the perfect amount of holiday vibes to your travels. There’s just something magical about this place!
